Saint Gerard of Toul (935-994) was Bishop of Toul in the 10th century. Originally from Alsace, he was appointed bishop in 963 by Emperor Otto I. He reformed the clergy, developed monastic life and had Toul Cathedral rebuilt. He worked for peace and justice in his diocese, while encouraging education and religious architecture. His action strengthened the spiritual and cultural influence of Lorraine. Recognized for his piety and miracles, he was canonized in 1050 by Pope Leo IX, himself from Toul. He is venerated as the protector of the city and diocese of Toul.
