Saint Vincent

There are several Saint Vincents, but the best known is Saint Vincent of Saragossa († 304), a Spanish deacon and martyr. Under the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian, he was arrested in Valencia with his bishop. Refusing to renounce his faith, he suffered horrible torture before dying a martyr. His cult spread quickly in France, particularly in Lorraine, where several churches are dedicated to him. He is the patron saint of winegrowers and deacons. He is often represented with a palm of martyrdom and a bunch of grapes, symbolizing his connection with the vine and the Eucharist.
