There are several saints named Sulpice, but the best known is Saint Sulpice the Pious († 647), bishop of Bourges in the 7th century. Born into a noble family, he gave up an administrative career to devote himself to the Church. Ordained bishop, he distinguished himself by his charity towards the poor and his defense of the oppressed. He fought against the abuses of the powerful and promoted the reform of the clergy. After his death, he was venerated as a saint, and several churches bear his name, including Saint-Sulpice in Paris. His cult also spread to Lorraine and eastern France.
