Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas (270-343) was the bishop of Myra, in present-day Turkey. Known for his great charity, he is said to have saved three young girls from poverty by secretly offering them a dowry. He is also famous for having resurrected three children killed by a butcher, which inspired the legend of Santa Claus. A defender of the faith, he is said to have participated in the Council of Nicaea in 325. After his death, his cult spread throughout Europe, particularly in Lorraine, where he became the patron saint of the region and of schoolchildren. His relics were transferred to Bari, Italy, in the 11th century. His feast day, December 6, is still celebrated, especially in eastern France.
