Saint Helena (c. 248-329) was the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I. Of modest origins, she married Constantius Chlorus, who became emperor, but was repudiated. After her son came to power, she converted to Christianity and supported the Christian faith. She undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, where she had the relics of the True Cross of Christ sought. She had several churches built, including that of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Renowned for her piety and charity, she is venerated as a saint by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Her feast day is celebrated on August 18.
