Saint Francis of Assisi (1181/82–1226), the son of a merchant, became a mendicant friar. He renounced wealth to embrace a life of poverty, humility, and radical love for the living world. Founder of the Order of Friars Minor, or Franciscans, he advocated a life of humility, joy, and communion with all creation, even addressing animals as brothers. He received the stigmata in 1224, marking his mystical union with Christ. Francis died in 1226, leaving behind a legacy of spirituality and poetry, including the famous "Canticle of the Creatures." Canonized in 1228, he has become the universal symbol of fraternity and harmony with the world.
Saint Francis de Sales (1567–1622) embodied a gentle and enlightened faith in an era of religious tensions. A tireless missionary and appointed Bishop of Geneva in 1602, he resided in Annecy and founded the Order of the Visitation with Jeanne de Chantal, advocating simplicity and humility. A renowned spiritual author, his works, such as "Introduction to the Devout Life," are touching in their accessibility and depth. He died in 1622, leaving a legacy of spirituality suitable for all, and was canonized in 1665, becoming the patron saint of writers and journalists.
