Saint Épvre (or Aper) was a bishop of Toul in the 6th century. Coming from a noble family, he chose the religious life and became bishop around 500. He distinguished himself by his charity towards the poor and his pastoral zeal. He founded churches and monasteries, strengthening the Christian faith in the region. According to tradition, he performed several miracles, including healings. After his death, he was venerated as a saint and his cult developed in Lorraine. His tomb in Toul became a place of pilgrimage. There are churches dedicated to Saint-Épvre in Barville and Tilleux, for example. His liturgical feast is celebrated on September 17.
