There are several Saint Elizabeths, but the most famous is Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231). A Hungarian princess, she married Louis IV of Thuringia and led a life of charity despite her rank. Widowed at 20, she devoted her fortune to the poor and founded a hospital. Known for the miracle of the roses, where her hidden bread for the poor turned into flowers, she embodied Christian compassion. She entered the Franciscan Third Order and died at the age of 24. Canonized in 1235, she is the patron saint of charitable works. Her feast day is celebrated on November 17.
