Saint Dominic was born around 1170 in Caleruega, Castile. The son of nobility, he turned his back on comfort to embrace study, prayer, and service. Having become a canon, he soon encountered the shadow of the Cathar heresies on the roads of Languedoc. Refusing the sword, he chose the light of the word, walking barefoot, wrangling hearts with patience and fire.
From this ardor, in 1216, the Order of Preachers was born: a people of poor brothers, rooted in truth and intelligence, dedicated to carrying the Word wherever it wavered. Tradition also attributes to Dominic the spread of the Rosary—this simple and profound prayer, a path of meditation, a spiritual weapon offered to a world in crisis.
He died in Bologna in 1221, without possessions or titles, but rich in a living heritage. Dominic was a monk, a missionary, and a master of prayer. His liturgical feast is celebrated on August 8.
