Clues
suggest
occupation
from
the
5th
millennium
BC,
notably
a
Neolithic
rampart
located
outside
the
village.
In
the
11th
century,
a
keep
was
built
on
the
rocky
spur
of
Vaudémont,
probably
by
the
Duke
of
Lorraine
or
one
of
his
vassals.
Towards
the
end
of
this
century,
Gérard
I,
first
Count
of
Vaudémont,
enlarged
the
castle
to
make
it
his
main
residence.
In
the
13th
century,
the
town
developed
and
was
surrounded
by
powerful
walls
with
towers,
reinforcing
its
strategic
role
in
the
region.
In
1635,
during
the
Thirty
Years'
War,
Vaudémont
was
besieged.
The
fortifications
were
finally
dismantled
in
the
17th
century
on
the
orders
of
Richelieu,
while
France
militarily
occupied
the
Duchy
of
Lorraine.
