Vaudémont

Municipality of Meurthe-et-Moselle with 64 inhabitants, near Saxon-Sion.

Evidence suggests occupation from the 5th millennium BC, including a Neolithic rampart located outside the village.
In the 11th century, a keep was built on the rocky spur of Vaudémont, probably by the Duke of Lorraine or one of his vassals. Towards the end of this century, Gérard I, first Count of Vaudémont, enlarged the castle to make it his main residence.
In the 13th century, the town developed and was surrounded by powerful walls with towers, reinforcing its strategic role in the region.
In 1635, during the Thirty Years' War, Vaudémont was besieged. The fortifications were finally dismantled in the 17th century on the orders of Richelieu, while France militarily occupied the Duchy of Lorraine.
