The
twisted
beeches
of
Sionne,
located
in
the
heart
of
the
forest
between
Sionne
and
Frebécourt,
are
remarkable
trees
with
their
sinuous
and
twisted
trunks
and
branches.
These
beeches,
also
called
"faux
de
Verzy"
in
other
regions,
have
an
atypical
growth
that
intrigues
botanists
and
visitors.
A
local
legend
tells
that
monks
from
the
Abbey
of
Saint-Basle,
evangelists
of
eastern
France
in
the
6th
century,
would
have
marked
their
route
with
"faux"
(twisted
beeches),
thus
explaining
the
presence
of
these
singular
trees
in
Sionne.
An
11
km
hiking
trail,
called
"Circuit
des
Hêtres
Tortillards",
has
been
developed.
