The Notre-Dame-en-sa-Nativité Church in Outremécourt is a fascinating building for its unique architecture and history of materials. Built in a hexagonal shape, a structure more common in some regions of Eastern Europe, such as Romania and Hungary, where one can find religious buildings with a centralized, sometimes polygonal plan, inspired by Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. It immediately captures the attention with its geometric layout that evokes more of a gathering space than a classical nave.
Its stones come from the old abbey of La Mothe, destroyed in 1645, which adds to its singular character: each stone tells a fragment of the history of the region. This reuse gives the walls a patinated, almost living appearance, with marks of the past and varied textures that enrich the surface.
Inside, the hexagonal space creates a special acoustics and light, dispersing the sun’s rays evenly, without a hierarchy of light, which softens the atmosphere. Small elements carved into the stone recall the craftsmanship of the builders of the time, while the arrangement of the openings allows the building to breathe while maintaining a soothing symmetry.
