Ancient city of Lorraine (Vosges), today in Haute-Marne (52).
The ancient citadel of La Mothe, once an imposing fortress, is a symbol of resistance and history in Haute-Marne.
Built in the 13th century, La Mothe quickly became a strategic bastion of the Duchy of Lorraine, intended to protect the region against attacks and invasions.
In the 17th century, the citadel was the scene of many memorable sieges, particularly during the wars between France and Lorraine.
The sieges of 1634 and 1645, orchestrated by French troops, marked the most intense assaults, with fierce fighting that would ultimately lead to its destruction ordered by Louis XIV in 1645, in order to neutralize this resistant fortress.
Today, the ruins of La Mothe, located near Soulaucourt, are a place for walking and remembrance, where visitors can discover the remains of the walls and contemplate a site full of history. The archives and testimonies of the time tell us about the importance of the citadel and the bravery of its defenders, who fought to the end to preserve their territory.
