JOAN OF ARC'S HOUSE IN DOMREMY. 17

inside the house and which I will have to talk about at greater length.
When you enter this house, you first enter an irregular room about 5 m. 50 long by 4 m. 80 wide and 2 m. 70 high. It served both as a bedroom for Joan's parents and as a dining room for the whole family.
It is said that this is where the Maid was born: you can easily find the location of the large bed of that time: A large fireplace with a high mantel, and decorated with an iron plate, with the coat of arms of France and Lorraine stands on one side of the room. You can see the existence of an old iron plate or plate intended to receive the light.
It is in the corner of this fireplace that poor Joan must have sat during the long winter vigils.
A large crossbeam and a projecting joist still bear the imprint of the numerous cuts made there by people wishing to take away some fragments as a souvenir of their visit, as we will see later.
In the middle of the room was placed in 1843 a bronze reduction of the full-length statue of Joan of Arc, due to the chisel of Princess Marie of Orléans.
On the black marble pedestal of this masterpiece so full of sentiment, grace and religious inspiration, we read the following inscription: "Given the King his father, to the department of Vosges, to be placed in the house where Joan of Arc was born."
