Saint-Michel Church

This stained glass window illustrates the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes in 1858.

This stained-glass window consists of two lancets rising into a twin bay topped with openings decorated with stylized flowers. The 19th-century Gothic Revival composition is characterized by its diamonds bordered by blue lines with stylized foliage motifs on a white background. Red and then green squares border the whole. In the center, within a gilded frame, is a single scene: the apparition of the Virgin to Bernadette Soubirous. On the left, the kneeling young girl, dressed in a simple shepherdess's habit, turns her eyes toward the heavenly apparition. In her hands, a rosary and a lit candle; on the ground, a pair of wooden clogs rest on the grass. This is Bernadette. On the right, the woman in a white dress and sky-blue sash, wearing a halo, her hands clasped in a prayer gesture, stands in the hollow of a flower-covered rock. A rosary hangs from her arm. This is the Virgin Mary. The surrounding landscape, snow-capped mountains, wooded hill, church in the background, places the scene in an Alpine pastoral context.
