Saint Peter

Saint Peter, also known as Simon Peter, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ and is considered the first pope of the Catholic Church. Born in Galilee, he was a fisherman before being called by Jesus to follow him. Peter plays a central role in the Gospels, recognizing Jesus as the Messiah and receiving from him the "keys to the Kingdom of Heaven."

Despite his impulsiveness and weaknesses—including denying Jesus three times before the crucifixion—Peter repented and became a key leader in the spread of Christianity after Jesus' resurrection. He preached primarily to Jews and founded the Christian community in Rome. According to tradition, he died a martyr under the Emperor Nero, crucified upside down out of humility. His feast day is celebrated on June 29, along with that of Saint Paul.
