Saint Thomas was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. Often nicknamed "Doubting Thomas", he refused to believe in the resurrection of Christ before seeing and touching his wounds. After this revelation, he became a zealous missionary. According to tradition, he evangelized Persia and India, where he founded Christian communities, including the Christians of Saint Thomas in India. He is said to have been martyred in Mylapore (present-day Chennai). He is the patron saint of architects and believers in search of faith. His cult spread to Lorraine and throughout Europe. He is often depicted with a square, symbolizing his legendary role in the construction of churches.
