Biblical Magi

The Magi are biblical figures who came from the East to worship Jesus at his birth. According to the Gospel of Matthew, they followed a star to Bethlehem. Tradition gives them the names Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar, and describes them as wise men or astrologers. They brought three symbolic gifts: gold, incense and myrrh. Their visit represents the universal recognition of Jesus as king and messiah. After seeing the child, they left without warning King Herod, who wanted to kill Jesus. Their feast is celebrated on Epiphany, January 6.

• Melchior is often depicted as an old man with a white beard, offering gold, symbolizing Jesus' kingship.
• Caspar is usually a younger man, sometimes of Asian origin, bringing incense, symbolizing Christ's divinity.
• Balthazar is depicted as a dark-skinned man, representing Africa, and offering myrrh, announcing Jesus' suffering and death.
