Saint Philomena is a mysterious saint whose existence is based on archaeological discoveries. In 1802, relics were found in the catacombs of Rome, bearing the inscription "Philomena, virgin and martyr". Quickly venerated, she was associated with a young Greek princess martyred under Diocletian in the 3rd century. Tradition tells that she refused to marry the emperor and suffered many tortures miraculously overcome before finally being beheaded. Her cult developed in the 19th century, notably thanks to the Curé d'Ars, who considered her a powerful intercessor. She is the patron saint of children and desperate causes. Her cult has spread to Lorraine and Europe despite the official withdrawal of her feast day in 1961.
