Paul the Apostle

Paul (around 5-67) is one of the main apostles of Christianity, although he did not know Jesus during his lifetime. First called Saul of Tarsus, he was a persecutor of Christians before being converted after a vision of Christ on the road to Damascus. He then became a tireless missionary, traveling the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel. He wrote several Epistles that form an essential part of the New Testament. His teaching emphasizes faith in Christ and the universality of salvation. Arrested in Rome, he was martyred under Nero, probably beheaded. He is the patron saint of missionaries and writers. His influence has profoundly marked the history of Christianity, including in Lorraine.
