Mark the Evangelist was a disciple of Saint Peter and the author of the Gospel of Mark, the oldest of the four gospels. Originally from Jerusalem, he accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their missions before becoming Peter's secretary in Rome. His Gospel emphasizes the action and miracles of Jesus. According to tradition, he founded the Church of Alexandria in Egypt, where he became the first bishop. He died a martyr around the year 68, dragged through the streets of Alexandria. He is the patron saint of notaries and writers. His symbol is the lion, and his cult spread throughout Europe, particularly in Lorraine.
