This stained glass window represents the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.
This stained glass window depicts one of the most iconic moments in the New Testament: the baptism of Jesus by Saint John the Baptist in the Jordan River. The composition highlights two central figures: John the Baptist, standing on the riverbank, dressed in a tunic of camel hair, pours water on Jesus’ head, symbolizing the act of baptism. He holds a long, thin cross, with a banner bearing the words Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), recalling his proclamation of Jesus’ messianic role. Jesus Christ, in the water, dressed in a simple white drape, adopts a humble and meditative posture, his hands crossed on his chest. Above the two main figures, a dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. Divine light, represented by a golden beam of light, connects the dove to Jesus, symbolizing the approval of God the Father. The stained glass window is framed with gilded, floral and geometric ornamental motifs typical of the 19th century, in a neo-Gothic style with Baroque influences. The complex framing of the stained glass window reveals a dialogue between medieval tradition and Baroque influences. The geometric lines that structure the background evoke Gothic architecture with their regular lines, while the gilded ornaments recall Baroque decorations.
