Saint Gontrude is a 4th-century martyr saint from the region of present-day Lorraine, France. She is the sister of saints such as Elophe, Euchaire and Libaire. According to tradition, she was martyred on October 6 during the reign of Emperor Julian the Apostate. After her death, she was buried in a chapel dedicated to Saint Maurice in Hagnéville, near Bulgnéville, where her relics rest in a gilded copper shrine. She is particularly honored on October 6, her feast day. Her first name, of Germanic origin, is composed of the elements "Gund" (combat) and "Trudis" (fidelity), meaning "she who is faithful in combat".
