Saint
Cosmas
was
a
Christian
physician
from
the
3rd
century,
originally
from
Asia
Minor
(present-day
Turkey).
He
was
inseparable
from
his
twin
brother,
Saint
Damian,
with
whom
he
practiced
medicine
voluntarily,
refusing
any
payment.
Nicknamed
the
"Saint
Anargyres"
(without
money),
they
treated
for
free,
attracting
many
followers
to
Christianity.
During
the
persecutions
of
Diocletian,
they
were
arrested,
tortured,
and
finally
martyred
around
the
year
303.
According
to
tradition,
several
medical
miracles
were
attributed
to
them
after
their
death.
They
became
patron
saints
of
physicians,
surgeons,
and
pharmacists.
Their
common
feast
day
is
celebrated
on
September
26.
