Saint Bertha (or Berthe) was a 7th-century abbess, venerated in Lorraine and France. Coming from a noble family, she founded and directed the monastery of Blangy in Artois, after becoming a widow. She led a life of prayer and charity, devoting her time to the poor and to the spiritual formation of nuns. She encouraged the strict observance of the monastic rule and was renowned for her wisdom. Several miracles were attributed to her after her death. Her cult developed particularly in Lorraine and Picardy. She is the patron saint of widows and nuns.
