Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879) is a French saint known for the Marian apparitions of Lourdes. Born into a poor family in Lourdes, she was a simple and often sick young girl. In 1858, at the age of 14, she reported having seen the Virgin Mary 18 times in the grotto of Massabielle. These visions, during which Mary presented herself as the Immaculate Conception, quickly attracted attention and sparked controversy.
Bernadette, despite the distrust of civil and ecclesiastical authorities, remained humble and faithful to her story. After these events, a miraculous spring gushed forth in the grotto, becoming a worldwide place of pilgrimage. Bernadette later entered the convent of the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she led a life of prayer and service despite fragile health. She died at the age of 35 in 1879 and was canonized in 1933. Her feast day is celebrated on April 16.
