Saint-Maurice Church

Stained glass window: Fidem servate, credo in Deum.

This stained glass window, composed of two lancets, is very sober and immediately readable thanks to the harmony of the colors. In the left lancet, a large golden cross, a universal symbol of the sacrifice of Christ and the Christian faith, stands in the center. Below, we recognize two keys. The key here evokes the authority entrusted to Saint Peter by Christ: "I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven" (Matthew 16:19). The phylactery at the bottom of the lancet inscribes "FIDEM SERVATE", a Latin injunction meaning "Keep the faith". It recalls the need to remain faithful to the teachings of Christ. For the right lancet, we observe a star. In the Christian tradition, the star recalls that of Bethlehem, guiding men towards divine truth. Below, a burning oil lamp evokes the emblem of the wise virgins (Matthew 25), who remain ready to welcome Christ when he returns. The phylactery bears the inscription "CREDO IN DEUM", which means "I believe in God". This phrase, taken from the Christian Creed, affirms faith in the one and triune God. From an aesthetic point of view, the motifs are simple but precise, in a refined style typical of 20th century stained glass windows. The background gridded with yellow and ochre diamonds gives an impression of regularity and stability, while the religious symbols are perfectly highlighted by their clear contours and bright colors. The juxtaposition of the elements - cross, key, lamp and star - follows a symmetry that invites meditation.
