16 THE HOUSE OF JOAN OF ARC IN DOMREMY

At the tip of the ogive appear the attributes of field work: a sheaf and vines, below which we read:

+ Vive + Labeun +

and on the following line the year 1481

+ Mil + iiii + iiii tit

The upper shield which holds the middle, represents the arms of France, surmounting the motto:

+ Vive + let Roy + Louis +

The one on the right reproduces the arms given by Charles VII in 1429 to the family of Joan of Arc: "azure with a high silver sword, the sheaf of gold, surmounted by a royal crown and flanked by two fleurs-de-lys, all in gold."
The one on the left bears: "azure with three gold ploughshares, the point upwards, and a gold rowel in the heart. »
This is the coat of arms of the Thiesselin family, whose daughter Miole married Claude du Lys in 1460, who was then the owner of the house.
In the past, these ornaments, as well as others that have disappeared, must have been covered in color, if we are to believe Montaigne, when, recounting his visit to Domremy in 1580, he expressed himself thus: "The front of the little house where Joan of Arc was born is all painted with her gestures, but age has greatly corrupted the painting" (1).
Above the door, in a niche provided for this purpose, we see a statue of the Maid on her knees. It is a reproduction of the one that is
