12 THE HOUSE OF JOAN OF ARC IN DOMREMY

more than a kilometer, these green meadows whose fertility equals their beauty and from which the best and most renowned hay in all of France is still produced today (1). »
To the position of modest farmer, were added, for the father of the Maid, the esteem and consideration of his fellow citizens, which proves that he was certainly not just anyone. Two very interesting acts establish this in a peremptory manner. One, dated October 7, 1423, contains, in favor of Robert de Saarbruck, lord of Commercy, for the right of protection and safeguard of Domremy and Greux, recognition of two gros par feu: Jacques d'Arc appears there as dean of the village and comes immediately after the mayor. Now, according to Mr. Edouard Bonvalot (2) there was only one dean or sergeant in each village; it was he who summoned the bourgeois to electoral assemblies and to the pleas, the mayors, aldermen and jurors to their public or extraordinary meetings; it was he who made the cries of the municipal decrees and ordinances; who commanded the watch day and night and who had the guard of the prisoners.
The second act was found in the Treasury of the Charters of Lorraine in the archives of Nancy, by MM. Le-page and Chappelier. It bears the date of March 31, 1426 (1427 according to the current style) and is related to a dispute raised before Robert de Vaudricourt, captain of Vaucouleurs, by a Mr. Guiot-Poignant against the inhabitants of Greux and Domremy. in what terms the presence of the latter is noted there:
"And, on this day it was taken and accepted by the said parties, at the place of Vaucouleur, before the noble man Robert, lord of Baudrecourt and Bloise, captain of the said Vaucouleur, on Sunday the vxj day of March, in the year one thousand cccc and six derrans. past. On which day and place the said parties appearing before the said Robert: That is to say the said Guiot-Poingnant, in person, claimant for a share; and the said Lord Henri d'Ogevillers, together with the said peasants and inhabitants of Greux and Dompremy, his men and subjects, appearing by venerable and discreet person Lord Jacques Flament, priest, Jehan Morel de Greux, and Jacquot d'Ars of the said Dompremy, their attorneys sufficiently founded by power of attorney, of which it has duly appeared to us, defendants, on the other hand. >>
Now Jaquot d'Ars was none other than Jacques d'Arc, the father of Joan, as established in an irrefutable manner by Mr. Boucher de Molandon in the valuable work that he read last year at the Sorbonne, before the Delegates of the Learned Societies, a work that further increases the interesting publications that the tireless archaeologist of Orléans has dedicated to the memory of Joan of Arc and that of her family, and which have earned him the so justly deserved distinction of Knight of the Legion of Honor (1).
(1) This work has since been published under the title: Jacques d'Arc, father of the Maid, his personal notability, according to the texts already known and recently discovered documents, 1885. Orléans, at Herluison, bookseller,
