Saint-Maurice Church

This stained glass window probably represents Saint Maurice. Gift of Victor Thiébaut.

This vertical stained glass window is composed of two main lancets surmounted by a quadrilobed tympanum decorated with a central red cross. The whole is characterized by a certain decorative richness, both geometric and figurative. The scene of the left lancet represents a character in soldier's or pilgrim's uniform, dressed in a red tunic and a short blue coat. He holds a large sword pointed towards the ground and seems to be accompanied by a raised standard. This character could be Saint Maurice, patron saint of soldiers and the church. He is often represented as a Roman warrior, carrying a sword, which corresponds to traditional iconography. In the scene of the right lancet, the figure represented is that of a monk in a brown habit, recognizable as a Franciscan. He holds a book in his hands, a symbol of prayer, study and meditation. The surrounding landscape, composed of rocks, a stream and trees, evokes the hermit life and solitude chosen by many saints, including Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order. The cross in the background reinforces the idea of a spiritual path centered on passion and redemption. The geometric sections are composed of floral motifs and polychrome rosettes, bringing a visual balance to the whole. Color palette: Blue, red, green and gold tones dominate, offering a vibrant and harmonious luminosity. Blue, especially in the backgrounds, evokes celestial spirituality.
