To the left, seated on a bench, wearing a halo and dressed in red and green, Saint Anne teaches. She holds a scroll. Facing her, dressed in white and sky blue, Mary listens with clasped hands. In the background, to the right, an elderly man with a white beard, also wearing a halo, holds a shepherd's crook; this is Saint Joachim, Mary's father. He observes the scene, slightly set back. The scene takes place in an open portico, with ornate capitals, revealing a distant city and a palm tree.
