This figurative stained glass window tells the story of the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Sainte-Bernadette-Soubirous, in Lourdes in 1858.
This figurative stained-glass window depicts the apparition of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes in 1858. The whole is contained within two lancet windows, typical of neo-Gothic religious architecture, and is probably signed by the J. Benoît workshop of Nancy. The scene takes place in a grotto, symbolizing that of Massabielle in Lourdes. On the left, the haloed Virgin Mary stands, dressed in white with a blue sash tied at the waist, holding a long rosary in her right hand. Golden rays envelop her. At the bottom right, Saint Bernadette Soubirous kneels, also holding a rosary, mirroring that of the Virgin. Her head is haloed. In the background, still on the right, another female figure is depicted carrying bundles of wood. On the ground, a yellow rose is visible at the feet of the Virgin, and a trickle of water recalls the miraculous spring of Lourdes, the one that gushes from the rock following the Virgin's instructions.
