This stained glass window represents one of the most symbolic scenes of the Christian tradition: the Annunciation.
This stained glass window illustrates the Annunciation, where the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear Christ. It was made by the “Victor Honer Nancy” workshop, as indicated in the cartouche at the bottom right. On the left, the angel Gabriel is kneeling in an attitude of reverence, his wings spread in an elaborate perspective. He holds out a branch of lilies towards Mary, a symbol of her immaculate purity. His green tunic, highlighted with pastel shades, evokes hope, while his golden halo attests to his celestial nature. Mary is represented standing, on the right of the composition. She is draped in a red dress and a blue cloak, traditional colors that symbolize her humanity and her divinity respectively. She slightly bows her head in a posture of humility, her left hand placed on her heart. In the background, a richly decorated red curtain forms a frame that sanctifies the scene. The curtain also evokes a symbolic separation between the earthly world and the divine sphere.
