Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul Church

This stained-glass window shows us two large figures. That of Saint Paul, on your left, and that of Saint Peter, on your right.

This flamboyant neo-Gothic stained-glass window is composed of two vertical lancets topped by a quatrefoil oculus and two openwork spandrels. The two main figures each occupy a lancet against a background of beautifully rich ornamental motifs, dominated by deep purple, ruby red, and gold highlights. The figure on the left, dressed in purple and white, carries a book, a symbol of his mission as a doctor and his numerous writings, and holds a sword, his traditional attribute, as he was martyred by beheading in Rome. His identity is confirmed by the inscription SANCTUS PAULUS visible in his halo. The figure on the right, dressed in red, holds the keys to the Kingdom in one hand, a reference to the Gospels according to Matthew 16:19, and a book in the other. He is depicted with white-gray hair and a full beard, a sign of wisdom. Like Saint Paul, his identity is clearly defined by the inscription of his name, SANCTUS PIETRUS, within his halo. The ornamental motifs surrounding him are composed of scrolls, quatrefoils, and stylized fleurs-de-lis, in a decorative style typical of the 19th century, inspired by medieval stained glass.
