Graffigny, geodesic tower
On the heights of the Chemin de Graffigny.
Generally built of brick or stone, it has an elongated shape and often resembles a factory chimney. A geodesic mark is engraved on the ground in the center, accessible from the outside through one or more openings at the base of the building.
The height of the structure allows a long plumb line to be passed through the sheltered interior to position the theodolite directly above the geodesic marker it overlooks, thus allowing precise measurements to be made with other known geodesic points.
