Saint Jean Chapel

Near Dommartin-sur-Vraine.
History of the site
Saint Jean Hill is a place of worship whose origins date back to the dawn of time. From its height of 494 metres, it dominates the surrounding area, and it is easy to understand the meaning of its name: the feast of Saint John the Baptist (June 24) corresponds to the feast of the sun (summer solstice). This pagan origin has, one imagines, generated many rites on this high point.
The only vestige of these events is a chapel that replaced an old pagan temple, but the original location of this building is still poorly known. The lord of Dommartin had it demolished in 1783 and the inhabitants of Rainville had it rebuilt at the very beginning of the 19th century.
